Chosing the correct size of cornertape Measurement and application video

To select the correct width of tape, measure the distance of the largest gap along the line you want to joint. Choose a width of tape that is slightly larger than this measurement. If you need to seal around a bathtub or shower you should use either the M or L size tapes regardless of the opening. This is because bathtubs and showers tend to move quite a bit when we get in and out of them.

Application guide

2.5mm - is a fine joint and should not be used where movement is expected. Use around tight fitting kitchen worktops and cupboards.

4 mm - is ideal for smaller gaps and suitable for use around kitchen worktops and tiled corners.

6 mm - gives you a bead of sealant roughly equal to the same size as if you'd used your finger and is suitable for showers and baths and where movement is expected.

8 mm - gives a broad bead of sealant and is ideal for filling large gaps it is recommended to be used where higher levels of movement are expected. Applications include shower trays and baths.

Please note that the above is only a guide the factor which that determins the correct size of cornertape to be used is the size of the largest gap and this is regardless of the application.

Peel back the white backing paper for approximately 15 cm. Place the tape roll against the wall, pushing the crease of the tape fully into the corner. Attach the top of the tape. Remove the white backing paper while rolling the tape down the wall. Carefully unfold the other half of the tape and stick that to the wall too. Take care not to pull the tape out of the corner. An easy way to avoid this is to use the forming tool to hold the tape into the corner when unfolding it.

Remove the foil.

Use the end of the forming tool and just slip it under the clear film to help release it away from the silver tape. Try starting a few centimetres in from the end.

Now fill the gap between the tapes with your sealant, no skill is required for this part, you don't need to apply a neat even bead as the forming tool in the next stage will smooth out the sealant. Use the accompanying joint former and apply it along the whole length of the joint. Hold it at a right angle to the wall as much as possible and apply a little presure to put a slight bend in the tool. This ensures that you force the sealant all the way into the gap giving you a much stronger seal. Remove the metal tape once you have finished smoothing the sealant out. Cornertape can be removed immediatly after, you don't need to wait because you will not pull the sealant out of the corner when using cornertape - unlike normal masking tape. A perfect finish!

Remember - If cornertape won't stick properly then neither will your new sealant !!!!!!!
  • Ensure that all surfaces where cornertape and sealant is to be applied are completely clean and dry but more importantly grease free otherwise neither  cornertape or your new sealant will adhere properly to the surfaces.
